PALLANKUZHI

Indian indoor game mostly played by Tamil women

  • Pallankuzhi is a traditional ancient game played in South India especially Tamil Nadu and Kerala. But this game is usually not played at night. 
  • The game includes a rectangular board, divided into two horizontal rows and seven vertical columns. There are 14 cups on the board and 146 counters. Usually, cowry shells or tamarind seeds or stone function as counters.
  • A box with seven pits on each side has to be filled with five seeds on each pit.
  • Two players will play the game by one of them starting from their side pit picking up all the seeds and distributing among the other places one after the other.
  • They start by scooping seeds from one cup and dropping each seed in one cup, repeat the process, till the point where there is nothing left to scoop in the cup next to where the seeds end.
  • The games go like this till the opponent losses all her seeds. There are lots more unique regulations in the game, the cups containing four seeds belong to the owner.

 ANTAKSHARI

Group of relatives gathered for a New Year's party, and have fun.

  • Antakshari was originally present in the Ramayana, where rishis (sages) sang the first verses of bhajanas continuously by singing another Bhajana beginning with the last letter of the ending word.
  • The game can be played by two or more people and is popular as a group activity during boring situation like a long journey, and etc.
  • The first singer has to sing to complete lines and then she or he may stop at the end of those or following lines.
  • The last letter of the last word sung is then used by the next singer to sing another song, starting with that letter. The winner or winning team is decided by a process of elimination.
  • The person or team that cannot come up with a song with the right consonant is eliminated if their opponents can produce such a song.
  • In this game one song can’t be repeated.

PARAMAPADAM

The ultimate aim of this game is to reach Vaikuntham

  • Paramapadam is an abode of Lord Vishnu called Vaikuntha. This is a Snakes and Ladders game.
  • A maximum number of four players can play this game.
  • These players will have a dice with numbers from one to six. Depending on the number got once the dice are rolled. Ladders indicate virtues of life and take to a number well ahead of the current one
  • When they come across snakes, it means they have done a sin and that they have come back to a number that they are already well ahead off
  • Whoever reached the number hundred is the winner.
